Oaths were taken very seriously among the Germanic tribes. If one made an oath, they did it in front of the Assembly and the Gods and Goddesses. This picture is a fancy oath ring for a wedding ceremony. In an everyday setting someone would hold the ring and the oath taker would take the ring in both hands and make the oath.  Some of the Folk believe that oath breakers are thrown into a nasty part of Hel (the underworld of the dead) to be tormented until Ragnarok is finished.
