In England, the words "poof" or "poofter" are slang for a gay man. Geeze, nate88, you never watched Monty Python?

Sorry to do this if you really like Ian McKellan, but I met him once. Well, not really met him, just talked for like 20 seconds. He lived in East London somewhere I think, at that time anyway, while I lived in Bethnal Green, also in East London. He came into a gay pub there with a friend just for one drink and they mostly just chatted to each other then left. Never saw him in any other gay pub in East London apart from that, and I was there for 10 years, so I don't think he usually went to them. I was in the same pub, chatting with the pub owner, who was a friend of mine. The four of us exchanged a few pleasantries at the bar while they were getting their drinks. When McKellan heard my Canadian accent he just asked me where I was from and we exchanged a few words about that. Didn't even try to pick me up or anything, the bastard.
